shredders and the proper way to use them
Paper shredders are machines that cut
paper documents into thin strips or tiny paper confetti. With a
majority of paper shredder usage in the business industry, paper
shredders are important in destroying confidential documents that
can contain a variety of information from credit card numbers and
social security numbers to bank account numbers, etc. However, paper
shredders are found in homes as well. Since identity theft is
circulating numerously, many people have taken the precautions to
shred any documents that contain information about themselves, such
as bills, old account statements that are no longer needed and any
other unneeded document that can give others access to private
information.
People should still be aware though, that using a paper shredder
does not necessarily eliminate other’s access to one’s personal
documents. For more secure measures, paper shredders should be used
properly. For example, a person should take care to shred the
document with the blades of the paper shredder going through the
words (i.e. paper should be inserted horizontally in most cases).
This is especially the case with strip-cut paper shredders as it
would be easy enough for someone to put the strips back together to
get the content of what was on the previously shredded paper.
Because of this, strip-cut paper shredders are the least-safest kind
of paper shredder available. However, strip-cut paper shredders are
very common because they are also the least expensive machines to
buy. Although paper shredding is better than just putting a private
document into the trash, they would most likely be recommended for
home use. Many businesses should try to invest in more expensive
paper shredders such as the cross-cut or confetti paper shredders as
they provide a less bulkier waste and shred the paper more
efficiently making it even harder for others to reassemble the
pieces of paper and get to the private contents of the document.
